Grid Modernization
Colorado Springs Utilities has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to pursue a project under which the public power utility will partner with NREL to test a section of its grid where a small-scale microgrid is planned for its Mesa Campus, which includes renewable energy sources such as solar, battery energy storage systems, and a public EV charging station.
Environment
The American Public Power Association in late June filed comments in response to a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency pre-rulemaking proceeding in which it seeks feedback from stakeholders as the agency considers revisions to EPA’s regional haze rule.
Security
The American Public Power Association is seeking clarification of several aspects of a Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency notice of proposed rulemaking to implement cyber incident reporting requirements for critical infrastructure entities.
Distributed Energy Resources
At its June meeting, the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency Board authorized IMEA management to negotiate a contract with a solar developer to be the sole off taker of energy from a 150-MW Illinois solar facility that could achieve commercial operation as soon as December 31, 2026.

The Gainesville Regional Utilities Authority recently appointed Ed Bielarski interim Chief Executive Officer of Florida public power utility Gainesville Regional Utilities during a board meeting.
