Nebraska public power utility Omaha Public Power District recently held a ribbon-cutting event for newest generation facilities, Turtle Creek Station and Standing Bear Lake Station.
Combined, the plants are capable of producing 600 megawatts of reliable, resilient power to help meet the growing energy needs of its area, the utility noted.
The Sept. 3 event also marked the beginning of construction on a third turbine (225 MW) coming to Turtle Creek Station -- an expansion for which OPPD is partnering with Kiewit Corporation.
Participants in the ribbon cutting event were:
• OPPD President & CEO Javier Fernandez
• OPPD Vice President & COO Troy Via
• OPPD Board Chair Matt Core
• Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen
• Papillion Mayor David Black
• Greater Omaha Chamber President & CEO Heath Mello
“Today, we celebrated 450 megawatts of new energy at Turtle Creek Station and breaking ground on a third unit, providing an additional 225 megawatts,” Fernandez said in a LinkedIn post about the event.
“Not only is this a celebration of our expanding generation fleet, but it is also a great day to honor the hard work and dedication put forth by the employees and partners that worked tirelessly on the project since its introduction in 2019. Operational since June, this plant will continue to run as needed and will be available to support regional power and reliability needs for southeast Nebraskan communities to continue to grow and thrive,” he wrote.
