The Omaha Public Power District recently celebrated the completion of its Standing Bear Lake Station with a ribbon-cutting event.
This marks the second new power plant launched this year to help serve growing customer needs.
The plant includes nine reciprocating internal combustion engines. The natural gas units, capable of collectively producing 150 megawatts of electricity, are dual-fueled, which means they can run on natural gas or switch to fuel oil when natural gas supplies are scarce, OPPD noted.
The units run on natural gas, with fuel oil as a backup, and are quick-start engines, firing up in less than 30 seconds.
“Their flexibility diversifies the tools we use to operate the grid and support reliability for our communities,” OPPD said.
