The Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company recently announced that its team at the Stony Brook Energy Center has reached two years with zero lost time accidents.
“The safety milestones that the Stony Brook team have recently achieved are a testament to the team’s strong safety culture,” said Chris Bourque, Site Manager, Stony Brook Energy Center Campus. “Safety culture is not just a program, it’s a shared commitment that drives every decision we make, enabling us to operate safely and reliably while ensuring everyone goes home unharmed each day. Congratulations to the Stony Brook team on these achievements. I look forward to working together to build on these achievements and reach even higher levels of safety excellence.”
“From Seabrook to Stony Brook, electric generation assets are central to our Project Participants’ portfolios and essential to the region’s energy independence and reliability,” said MMWEC CEO Tom Barry.
“However, these assets are only as valuable as the dedicated professionals who operate them around the clock. At MMWEC, we are fortunate to work with some of the best operators in the industry, and we deeply appreciate their commitment to excellence," Barry said.
"While strong performance matters, nothing is more important than their safety. That is why we are especially proud to celebrate several safety achievements, including two years with zero lost-time accidents," Barry said.
Managing a 527-megawatt facility, a natural gas pipeline, oil storage, and transmission lines at SBEC, MMWEC said this milestone represents a commitment by staff at Stony Brook Energy Center to a culture of safety, highlighted by:
• The re-institution of the SBEC Safety Committee
• 65 employee-led safety suggestions put into action
• 100% completion of all annual safety training
MMWEC/Stony Brook Energy Center has received a Diamond level Safety Award of Excellence for safe operating practices in 2025 from the American Public Power Association.
Stony Brook Energy Center is located in Ludlow, Mass.
MMWEC is the Commonwealth’s designated joint action agency for municipal utilities in
Massachusetts. Through its enabling state legislation, MMWEC became a not-for-profit, public corporation and political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
MMWEC’s enabling legislation gave it the unique power to issue tax-exempt revenue bonds to finance electric generating facilities and other projects. Using this statutory authority, MMWEC has issued more than $7 billion in bonds since 1976. It is the largest provider of asset-owned generation for municipal light departments in New England.
