Massachusetts public power utility Middleborough Gas and Electric Department marked a significant milestone in the construction of its new Electric Division Building with a traditional topping off ceremony on May 15.

Employees, project partners, commissioners, and building committee members came together to celebrate the placement of the final structural beam, honoring both the progress achieved and the collaborative spirit driving the project forward.

"The topping-off ceremony, a time-honored construction tradition, celebrates the placement of the final structural beam at a building’s highest point. This moment marks the completion of the building’s framework and symbolizes achievement, safety, and the dedication of everyone involved," it said.

Attendees had the unique opportunity to sign the beam before it was lifted into place, creating a lasting tribute to the teamwork and commitment behind the project.

The final beam, adorned with an American flag and an evergreen tree, represents safety, success, and good fortune for the building and its future occupants. The evergreen tree symbolizes life and growth, while the American flag stands for unity, strength, and shared values, honoring MGED’s connection to both the nation and the local community, the utility said.

“This milestone represents more than just the completion of a construction phase,” said Ken Stone, MGED General Manager. “As the final beam is raised, it transforms into a symbol of progress, resilience, and the solid foundation we are establishing, not only for this building, but for the future it will enable.”

The new facility will enhance operational efficiency and support MGED’s mission to deliver safe, reliable electric service to local residents and businesses.

During the ceremony, Stone expressed his gratitude to all contributors, adding, “The dedication, professionalism, and commitment to quality and safety will leave a lasting impact for years to come. This ceremony allows us to pause, reflect, and celebrate how far MGED has come together.”

"The ceremony emphasized that the foundation is set for a strong, bright future for generations to come and will serve as a lasting reminder of the people, teamwork, and craftsmanship that made it possible," MGED said.

Construction is scheduled to continue through December 2026, with the building anticipated to become operational in spring 2027.
