Michigan Municipal Electric Association Report Details Impressive Benefits of Public Power

The Michigan Municipal Electric Association (MMEA) recently released a report that details the positive impact of public power utilities in the state.

MMEA commissioned the report to measure the real, financial returns from reliability and residential rates for public power customers across the state.

“On an anecdotal level, our Public Power communities have always known they were doing a great job, but our MMEA Board of Directors wanted to quantify the impact with iron-clad data in a comprehensive report to prove, once and for all, how effective we are compared to surrounding utilities in the state,” said Katie Abraham, MMEA Executive Director.

MMEA provides its 40 Member Municipalities with a host of services including an annual conference, communication services, legislative services, legal assistance, educational seminars, and training.

Details on the report were included in an article in the most recent issue of MMEA’s Currents Magazine.

The article also includes a video with remarks from Charlie West, General Manager, Lowell Light & Power (Michigan), Chris McArthur, Electric Superintendent, City of Sturgis Electric (Michigan) and Katie Abraham, Executive Director of MMEA.

West will participate in a session at APPA’s National Conference in June that will focus on the report. Other panelists will be Dawn Lund, Vice President, Utility Financial Solutions and Paul Jakubczak, Utility Director, Coldwater Board of Public Utilities (Michigan).

APPA’s National Conference will take place June 6-11 in New Orleans, La.

A recent episode of APPA’s Public Power Now podcast featured Jeff Stewart, Director of Louisiana public power utility Lafayette Utilities System, and chair of the National Conference Local Arrangements Committee, and Ursula Schryver, APPA’s Senior Vice President, Education, Training, and Events.

They detailed key sessions and activities at APPA’s 2025 National Conference in New Orleans, La., as well as what New Orleans and Louisiana have to offer and what attendees can expect.
