Manitowoc Public Utilities GM Troy Adams Details Plant Conversion Project in Meeting with Buttigieg

Troy Adams, General Manager of Wisconsin public power utility Manitowoc Public Utilities, recently met with U.S. Secretary of Transportation Peter Buttigieg. Among other things, Adams shared with Buttigieg the status of MPU’s project to convert two coal-fired power plants to run on densified biomass fuel derived from clean industrial waste.

On July 30, as part of his Great Lakes Port Tour, Buttigieg visited Manitowoc, Wisconsin. While in Manitowoc, Buttigieg toured a crane manufacturer and grain malting company located in the in the port.

Buttigieg and local stakeholders including MPU participated in a roundtable discussion concerning the St. Lawrence Seaway as it relates to economic development.

Along with updating Buttigieg on the plant conversion project, Adams also emphasized the importance of the flexibility that St. Lawrence Seaway provides to MPU for transportation of fuel pellets as well as raw materials for pelletization.

Additionally, Adams shared with Buttigieg that MPU, along with the state of Wisconsin and the Department of Energy, is in the early stages of exploring the viability of carbon capture for their power plants to produce blue methanol, a renewable low-carbon maritime fuel.
