Alabama public power utility Huntsville Utilities in December took delivery of an 83,000-pound battery for a grid load management project.

The Tesla battery will store electricity during off-peak times and discharge during peak demand periods and will relieve stress on transformers and grid equipment by reducing overloads. Installation will take place in 2026.

The utility received $125,000 in grant funding for the project from the American Public Power Association’s Demonstration of Energy & Efficiency Developments program, which funds research, pilot projects, and education to improve the operations and services of public power utilities.

“We appreciate APPA providing a grant for this exciting project,” said Wes Kelley, President and CEO of Huntsville Utilities. “This is the first project of its kind in North Alabama, and we hope to use the information from it to install similar technology across our system.”

The American Public Power Association’s Public Power Energy Tracker is a resource for association members that summarizes public power energy storage projects that are currently online. The tracker is available on APPA's website.
