The Greeneville Energy Authority Board in April voted to move forward with a comprehensive buildout of fiber optic internet service to the entire county.

The initiative, operating under GEA’s broadband brand GEA Connect, is slated to be completed by spring 2029, marking a transformational milestone in connectivity for residents and businesses across Greeneville and Greene County, the Tennessee public power utility noted.

Before construction begins, GEA will submit the approved business case to the State of Tennessee for review. The state has 60 days from receipt to issue its decision. GEA plans to release additional project details and timelines once state approval is secured.

GEA Connect currently provides high speed fiber internet & telephone throughout the entire City of Greeneville, as well as portions of Western Greene County.

The board approved expansion will extend this service to GEA’s full electric service territory, bringing local broadband access to customers who have historically had limited connectivity options.

“This is a significant step forward for the citizens of Greene County,” said GEA leadership. “We are committed to delivering reliable, local broadband internet to every customer within our entire electric service footprint.”

GEA is a community owned electric and broadband utility serving Greeneville and Greene County, Tennessee.

Through its GEA Connect brand, GEA provides residential and business fiber internet and phone services with a commitment to local ownership, affordability, and exceptional local service, it noted.
