U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright on June 4 issued an emergency order directing the Orlando Utilities Commission to ensure that Unit 1 at the Stanton Energy Center in Orlando, Florida, a coal-fired power plant, remains available to operate.
The DOE order is in effect beginning on June 4, 2026, through September 1, 2026.
In response to this federal directive, OUC "will not be able to place Stanton Energy Center Unit 1 into extended cold shutdown at this time. Additionally, OUC will fully comply with the order while continuing to prioritize the safe and reliable delivery of electricity to our customers and community," the Florida public power utility said.
The Florida Municipal Power Agency recently announced that it has closed out its ownership of Stanton 1 Unit, successfully assigning it back to Florida public power utility OUC.
The reassignment was a multi-year process sought after by FMPA’s All Requirements Project, Homestead, and Lake Worth Beach, and it is projected to save these parties an estimated total of $10 million each year.
“This would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of these three groups as well as the teams at FMPA and OUC,” FMPA said.
ARP is FMPA’s largest power supply project.
