The American Public Power Association’s Demonstration of Energy & Efficiency Developments program recently approved funding for various grants and scholarships.

The action took place at DEED’s Fall 2025 meeting with DEED Board Members signing off on funding for grants, scholarships and internships.

A total of just over $709,000 was approved for funding. 

Grant funding approvals were for the following public power utilities and entities and projects:
•    Longmont Power & Communications, Empowered by Data: Investigating Behavioral Shifts from Home Energy Monitors; $19,235 
•    New York Power Authority, C&I Battery Storage – An Untapped Lever for APPA Members, $125,000 
•    New York Power Authority, Implementation of Ultrasonic Flow Meters for Desuperheater Block Valve Monitoring, $35,000 
•    Santee Cooper, Impact Analysis of Residential Three-Part Rates, $15,000 
•    Northern California Power Agency, Geothermal Efficiency Conversion for Kilowatt Optimization (GECKO), $25,000 
•    Santee Cooper, B-T-M Residential Battery Storage, $125,000 
•    Danvers Electric, Advanced Metering Infrastructure Assessors Database Electric Service Sizing Tool, $75,000 
•    Manitowoc Public Utilities, Smart Tools for Public Power: Automating Energy Storage Maturity Assessments using Storage Compass, $125,000 
•    American Municipal Power, Inc., Operational Excellence Assessment Platform, $125,000 
In addition, APPA was awarded $16,000 for a Public Power Internship Playbook.
Scholarships and Internships

Scholarship and internships funding was awarded to the following public power utilities:
•    Westfield Gas & Electric, internships ($8,000) 
•    Northern California Power Agency, internship ($4,000) 
•    Kaukauna Utilities, internship ($4,000) 
•    Kennett, Mo., City Light Gas & Water, scholarship ($2,000) 
•    Stowe Electric Department, internship ($4,000) 
•    Athens Utilities Board, scholarship, ($2,000)

The DEED program funds research, pilot projects, and education to improve the operations and services of public power utilities.
