Nebraska public power utility Dawson Public Power District successfully hosted its annual Utility Line Camp, welcoming 15 regional high school students for an immersive, hands-on experience in the utility line trade, it said on May 29.

The no-cost, half-day camp provided participants with practical demonstrations and activities designed to introduce them to the critical skills of a utility lineworker.

Students engaged in a variety of activities, including learning proper pole climbing techniques, experiencing rides in a bucket truck, and observing a pole change-out. These hands-on examples offered a realistic glimpse into the challenging yet rewarding career path.

“Giving these students a real-world experience is invaluable,” said Operations Manager Jeremy Kaiser. “We believe in fostering the next generation of skilled professionals, and this camp is a fantastic way to spark their interest in an industry critical to our communities.

The DPPD Utility Line Camp aims to address the growing demand for skilled utility line technicians by showcasing the profession to local youth and highlighting the opportunities available within the energy industry.
