Dominion Energy on May 7 announced plans for a new 3,000-megawatt combined cycle natural gas power station in Cumberland County, Virginia.

This comes just weeks after state regulators approved a large addition of new solar and battery storage projects, and the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project began delivering power to the grid in late March, the investor-owned company noted.

Located on 900 acres in northern Cumberland County, the power station will consist of two natural gas, hydrogen-capable combined cycle units.

The project will receive extensive local and state reviews, with several opportunities for public participation, the company said. If approved, it is expected to come online between 2033 and 2034.

“The project will strengthen Virginia’s energy independence and generate substantial customer savings by reducing reliance on more costly imported power," the company said.
