City Council for Hastings, Nebraska, Approves Agreement for Renewable Natural Gas Landfill Project

NewCarbon has finalized a 25-year agreement with the City of Hastings, Nebraska, a public power community, to convert methane emissions from the Hastings Sanitary Landfill into renewable natural gas. 

The project will capture methane gas generated by decomposing organic waste at the landfill, clean and upgrade it into pipeline-quality RNG, and inject it into a nearby natural gas pipeline, allowing it to be distributed and used just like conventional natural gas while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and turning waste into a valuable, locally produced energy resource.

NewCarbon is investing roughly $20 million to develop the landfill RNG project, allowing the City of Hastings to avoid the capital cost of installing a gas collection system and to meet future methane capture requirements at no expense to taxpayers. 

In addition, the project is expected to generate up to $2 million in royalty revenue for the City of Hastings over 25 years.

Project construction is slated to begin in late 2027, with commercial operations starting by mid-2029.
