APPA is partnering with Lawrence Berkeley National Lab to provide a webinar series for a cohort of APPA members wishing to learn more about ways they can pilot advanced grid technologies and other approaches to grid enhancement via sandboxes.

Sandboxes are mechanisms for testing new programs, technologies, and business models outside of traditional approaches to increase the speed of adoption.

Participating members will be invited to an interactive meeting series where they will learn about how they can innovate at their utilities while minimizing financial risks to customers.

The purpose of this cohort is to:

  • Support public power utilities in overcoming the unique challenges they face to effectively test and quickly scale advanced transmission and distribution (T&D) technologies that improve reliability and affordability.
  • Provide participants with practical information and actionable templates and frameworks, to adapt for their specific circumstances.
  • Support peer-sharing and continuous learning, including providing direct follow-up technical assistance for selected interested utilities to develop and implement a sandbox mechanism.

The meetings will be held monthly from July through November and will last approximately 75 minutes.

Based on input from APPA members, topics will include:
1. Demonstrating the Value of Innovation at Public Power Utilities - Sandboxes as a Means to Strategically and Effectively Pursue New Ideas
2. Strategies for Successfully Implementing Sandboxes, Pilots, and Demonstrations so that they Scale
3. Advanced T&D Technologies - Understanding the Landscape & Sharing Experiences
4. Securing Funding and Maximizing ROI for Advanced T&D Technologies
5. Peer and Expert Coaching on Participant Questions, Follow-Ups from Past Meetings, and Additional Topics
