ISO New England has filed a proposal with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission that will establish the ISO as the independent reviewer of transmission owners’ asset condition projects in the region.
Asset condition projects are upgrades to the power grid that replace deteriorating transmission facilities.
After following an extensive stakeholder engagement process, the proposal received unanimous support from voting members of the New England Power Pool (NEPOOL) Participants Committee and the Participating Transmission Owners Administrative Committee.
Historically, the ISO and other regional transmission organizations across the country have had limited involvement in the process for planning asset condition projects. ISO-NE is assuming this role at the request of the New England states and stakeholders and as part of its continued commitment to regional collaboration and engagement.
Next steps include completing an ongoing interim review process, and, if the filing is approved by FERC, establishing a new group within the ISO to perform asset condition project review.
The ISO will provide updates on the status of the filing (part 1 and part 2) and the interim review to the Planning Advisory Committee and on the Asset Condition Reviewer Key Project page.
