American Municipal Power on Aug. 20 announce that it has selected University of Toledo student Magdolna Herrick as the 2026 recipient of the Kyle Andrew Krieger Memorial Scholarship.
AMP established this scholarship, available to current and former AMP interns, in honor of Kyle Andrew Krieger, who graduated from The Ohio State University in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering. He was a former engineering intern at AMP and passed away in 2024 after a valiant battle with cancer, AMP noted.
Herrick was presented with the scholarship check on Aug. 19 during the AMP Board of Trustees meeting.
The check was presented by Kyle Krieger’s father, Ed Krieger, who is the Deputy City Manager -- Infrastructure and Public Utilities for the City of Westerville, and is the former Director of the Piqua Power System and a former member of the AMP Board of Trustees; and his stepmother, Pam Sullivan, AMP Chief Operating Officer and President of AMP Transmission.
Coming from a public power family, Kyle and his family have always demonstrated strong support for public power, AMP noted.
“We are happy to be able to present this scholarship to Magdolna, who has demonstrated many of the same qualities of Kyle, including intellectual curiosity and an innovative mindset,” said AMP President and CEO Jolene Thompson. “This scholarship helps us to fondly remember Kyle while also working to nurture future professionals in the industry and support their continued educational journey.”
This one-time scholarship award of $3,000 is presented annually to one student who is a current or former AMP intern and has at least one year of education remaining in pursuit of either a bachelor’s or an advanced degree. The applicants must provide confirmation of enrollment in good standing and submit a personal statement that describes how receiving this merit award would enhance their studies and/or achievement of an academic goal.
Herrick, who is pursuing Bachelor of Science degrees in computer science and engineering and electrical engineering with an expected graduation in December 2027, has served as the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Intern since May 2025. In that role, she has assisted in new deployments of AMP’s AMI system and has served as the first tier of support in troubleshooting technical issues within the AMI environment for Member communities with AMP AMI systems.
“Magdolna has been a strong contributor for the AMI team from her very first day,” said Branndon Kelley, AMP Senior Vice President of Strategy and Innovation & Chief Strategy Officer, who oversees Herrick’s department. “She has proven to be adept, innovative and productive in her role, and her contributions continue to be very valuable to the team. She is a deserving recipient of this scholarship award.”
Kyle Krieger was filled with a passion for learning and academic excellence, AMP noted. When he worked as an intern at AMP in the Generation Operations Department during the summer of 2014, he worked cooperatively with AMP contractors during the construction of a hydroelectric plant on the Ohio River at the Willow Island Locks and Dam.
Following his graduation, Krieger joined Turner Construction Company as a Field Engineer and was later promoted to Superintendent. He held that role until his death in 2024.
"He loved his work at Turner Construction so much that he continued to work through all of his treatments. One of the most notable projects that he worked on during his time at Turner Construction was the construction of the National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus, a project in which he took great pride," AMP said.
