The Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors has approved a major overhaul of El Centro Generating Station Unit 4, a critical local power resource that helps support reliable electric service across IID’s service area, the California public power utility said on July 9.
The approximately $9.2 million investment will fund a comprehensive overhaul of the unit’s steam turbine and generator, including inspections, testing, repairs and replacement of components where needed.
Unit 4 has been in commercial operation since 1968 and provides approximately 70 megawatts of local generation capacity, along with important system support services that help IID maintain reliable power delivery.
“This is the kind of work customers may not always see, but they depend on it every day,” said IID Board Chairwoman Karin Eugenio. “Investing in our local power infrastructure helps ensure IID can continue providing reliable service, especially during periods of high demand.”
The overhaul follows extensive inspection and planning by IID staff. As of May 2025, Unit 4 had accumulated more than 93,000 operating hours since its last major inspection.
The project will help ensure the unit continues operating safely and reliably while supporting key electric system needs, including voltage support, reserve capacity and grid stability.
"The investment also supports IID’s broader commitment to Powering Our Community Together by maintaining the infrastructure needed to serve homes, businesses, farms and communities across the region," it said.
Work on the project is expected to continue through 2027 and will be funded through IID’s Electric System Capital Plan.
