Legislation that creates a pathway for Colorado Springs Utilities to operate a coal-fired unit until Dec. 31, 2032, passed the Colorado Senate on May 4.

Senate Bill 26-182 passed the state Senate on a 32-3 vote and it will move forward to be introduced in the House.

The new bill allows the Colorado public power utility to file a new Clean Energy Plan by the end of 2026 and creates a pathway for it to operate the coal-fired unit at the Ray Nixon Power Plant until Dec. 31, 2032.

Under current state law, the utility must retire this unit by the end of 2029.
