Adrienne Lotto, Senior Vice President for Grid Security, Technical & Operations Services at the American Public Power Association, recently attended national laboratory meetings focused on advancing utility resilience capabilities and helping utilities make risk informed decisions to solve the energy challenges of the future.

“By participating in these types of meetings, APPA staff can learn more about the latest trends in the power sector,” Lotto noted. “APPA staff can then relay that knowledge to member utilities.”

Lotto traveled to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee to attend a meeting related to the lab’s EDGAR (Enhancing Distribution Grid Anticipatory Resilience) program.

ORNL is providing “Resilience as a Service” through EDGAR, a three-year project.

Lotto, who sits on the advisory board for EDGAR, noted that ORNL is looking to specifically work with small public power utilities and cooperatives with the goal of advancing and maturing resilience capabilities.

Separately, she attended a meeting at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The U.S. Department of Energy on Dec. 1 renamed NREL the National Laboratory of the Rockies.

This meeting focused on the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems (ARIES), the DOE’s most advanced energy systems research platform.

The goal of the ARIES platform is to help utilities make risk informed decisions to solve the energy challenges of the future. The platform is designed to derisk, optimize, and secure current energy systems and provide insight into future energy systems that are secure, resilient, reliable, and affordable.

Lotto serves as Chair of the ARIES Advisory Board.
