Iowa public power utility Spencer Municipal Utilities recently provided an update on work related to a transmission line project that will boost reliability.
“Over the last few weeks, SMU has had contractors working in our community updating a transmission line that is one of our main feeds to bring power to the community of Spencer,” the utility said in late October.
“The existing poles and infrastructure were end of life and this project will help keep our electric service reliable. Customers should not notice any disruptions in service throughout the remainder of the project that is scheduled to be completed next spring,” it said.
Amanda Gloyd, Marketing and Communications Manager for SMU, told Public Power Current that the project has been in planning for a couple of years.
“This section of line was our oldest and had smaller conductor than our newer lines. This project is part of our continual reinvestment in capital assets,” she said.
“In addition to the transmission project this year, we installed a tie circuit between our center and east substations to allow for increased reliability in the event of a substation transformer or other failure. We also completed substation relay upgrades at three of our substations this year as part of our continual reinvestment plan,” Gloyd said.
