The City Council of North Platte, Nebraska, recently approved a wholesale power contract with the Nebraska Public Power District. The City Council took the action at its Sept. 16 meeting.
The existing 2016 wholesale power contract between North Platte and NPPD is scheduled to expire on December 31, 2035.
Under the approved contract, the city and NPPD will extend their long-term relationship and joint strategy with a wholesale power contract that starts at the beginning of 2026 and runs through December 31, 2060.
Tom Kent, President and CEO of NPPD, appeared at the City Council meeting where discussed the contract.
“It’s an exciting time for all of us. A lot of new load coming into the service territory that we serve. We’ve got about 1,400 megawatts of new generation and transmission in our plan – about $3 billion,” he said at the meeting.
Kent recognized two NPPD Board members – Kirk Olson and Rusty Kemp – who were in attendance at the meeting.
Olson and Kemp represent “this part of the state” in the North Platte area, he noted. “That’s the strength of public power and the strength of our relationship over fifty plus years” and how “we work together as a community,” Kent said.
