Colorado Springs Utilities on July 21 joined local leaders and NextEra Energy Resources to celebrate Colorado Springs, Colorado’s first battery energy storage system at a ribbon-cutting event.

Jackson Fuller Energy Storage, with a capacity of 100 megawatts, will provide direct benefits to Springs Utilities’ customers and will be owned and operated by a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, one of the country's largest energy infrastructure companies.

The battery energy storage system is located at Springs Utilities’ Jackson Fuller Substation.

The battery components will occupy approximately 16 acres on the 36-acre substation site. The system became operational in May 2025.

“Battery energy storage will play an essential role in our energy transition from fossil fuels to more renewable resources,” said Colorado Springs Utilities Chief Executive Officer Travas Deal. “However, this technology is about more than just renewables. It will help us manage all generation resources more efficiently and ensure the ongoing reliability of our electric grid.”

Battery energy storage technology will play a key role in Colorado Springs Utilities’ efforts to meet state energy regulations. It also allows the utility to store excess energy generated from various sources – such as natural gas and renewables – and can hold the stored energy for use during peak demand periods when it’s traditionally more expensive to generate or purchase fuel on the market, a news release related to the event noted.

“We’re proud to work with Springs Utilities to deliver a project that will provide immense benefits to the local community and the state of Colorado,” said Jim Shandalov, vice president of origination at NextEra Energy Resources. “The project will help Springs Utilities meet their sustainability goals while helping meet the energy demands of the region.”

Jackson Fuller Energy Storage is NextEra Resources’ third energy storage facility to become operational in Colorado. The company’s subsidiaries currently operate 11 wind energy facilities and four solar energy facilities in the state.

During the event, NextEra Energy Resources presented a $5,000 donation to Project COPE. Administered through the Colorado Springs Utilities Foundation, Project COPE procures funding for and provides utilities payment assistance to the customers of Colorado Springs Utilities.
