An official with the North American Electric Reliability Corp. on June 26 provided details on the April 2025 blackout that affected Spain and Portugal, with the official saying that the North American grid has already implemented measures to mitigate against the issues that caused the Iberian Peninsula Blackout.

Based on reports from the Spanish authorities, NERC’s Mark Lauby explained that there were four primary contributing factors to the Iberian Peninsula Blackout:
•    Poor voltage ride through performance;
•    Insufficient dynamic voltage regulation;
•    Unreliable regulation of conventional resources; and
•    Potential gaps in operational planning.

NERC presented a comparison of each of the recommendations made by Spanish authorities to the North American grid, concluding that each Spanish recommendation is already addressed in North America by existing reliability standards or other actions that NERC has already taken.

Lauby’s presentation, which was made at FERC's monthly open meeting, is available on FERC’s website.
