Officials from public power utilities across the U.S.  on June 6 participated in the 16th year of the Public Power Day of Giving in New Orleans, La., which is the site for this year’s APPA National Conference. The Day of Giving was founded by APPA in 2008, in New Orleans, after Hurricane Katrina.

In New Orleans, the event is partnering with Rebuilding Together New Orleans and The Green Project.

More than 100 volunteers participated in the event.

Rebuilding Together New Orleans is a leading national nonprofit dedicated to repairing homes, revitalizing communities, and rebuilding lives. With over 40 years of experience promoting safe and healthy housing, the organization remains deeply committed to the long-term recovery and revitalization of New Orleans neighborhoods.

This year’s project included painting, clearing debris, moving heavy objects, and performing other manual labor tasks both inside and outside various homes.

The Green Project is dedicated to environmental sustainability and community engagement. The organization is a salvage store, paint recycling center and environmental education hub located in the St. Roch neighborhood. They work to divert waste from landfills and help lower the amount of fossil fuels needed to create new products and demonstrate that reclaimed goods have value.

Volunteers sorted and recycled paint, processing waste paint, and other warehouse tasks.
