Nebraska Public Power District hosted 27 students from across the state at its second annual Utility Line Camp, aimed at inspiring a new generation of lineworkers, the public power utility said on June 3.

The camp was held at NPPD’s York Operation Center May 29 at the site's indoor and outdoor training facilities.

“With the tremendous training facilities we have here in York, we can get students involved in a wide range of activities that give them a great feel for every aspect of being a lineworker. The students were very engaged throughout the day, and it's exciting to see their interest sparked in this career path,” noted NPPD Operation Program Manager Trevor Roth.

The activities included riding in a bucket truck, climbing a tower, learning how to install equipment, using lineworker tools such as hot sticks, and highlighting different safety and rescue scenarios. NPPD first held the Utility Line Camp in 2024 with 17 attendees and expanded the number of openings in 2025.

“The response during the first year of the camp was great, and the spots filled up quickly in year two, even with increasing the number of available openings. We are looking forward to continuing the camp in the years to come,” added Roth.

The participants included students from Auburn, Cedar Bluffs, Columbus, Dorchester, Fairbury, Fremont, Gothenburg, Hershey, McCool Junction, North Platte, Paxton, Rising City, Silver Creek, Shelby, Wilber, Utica, and York.
