The Middleborough Gas & Electric Department held a historic milestone of a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Electric Operations Building on May 21.

The existing Electric Building has been a part of Middleborough for approximately 150 years and has served various purposes.

Initially, it housed a water wheel that generated electricity directly from the basement. Later, it functioned as MGED’s electric substation facility, and for many years now, it has provided office space for our electric division employees.

“After many years of discussing whether to renovate or construct a new building, the vision began to take shape with a dedicated team of key individuals approximately four years ago, the Massachusetts public power utility said.

After evaluating the most viable options to ensure the building's safety, security, and capacity to accommodate MGED's growing needs, it was decided to blend traditional and contemporary elements.

Working closely with the Middleborough Historical Commission, it was determined that the best approach is to keep the three original exterior walls to preserve the building's heritage.

Specifically, the three original exterior walls will be preserved to maintain the building's historical integrity while incorporating modern design elements that address the current operational needs. “This project highlights the definition of teamwork, making positive change, and what can be accomplished when many people strive to achieve one common goal,” the utility said.

“My heartfelt thanks to every MGED employee for your dedication, enthusiasm, and commitment to moving this project forward. Your passion for MGED’s mission is genuinely inspiring. While change inevitably presents challenges, you have navigated them with exceptional grace; I am excited to continue working alongside you as we achieve our shared vision,” said Ken Stone, General Manager at the Middleborough Gas & Electric Department.

MGED said the project will “pave the way for a brighter, more resilient future—one in which Middleborough continues to thrive with a vibrant, community-powered energy infrastructure.”

“MGED thanks all who have contributed to the years of planning, especially the MGED employees, for their dedication and commitment to the project.”
