The PJM Interconnection has proposed changing its rules to streamline Surplus Interconnection Service, which refers to the unused portion of service for a facility that cannot or does not operate continuously, every hour of every day, year-round.
PJM made the proposal in a FERC filing on Dec. 20, saying it allows new generators that do not trigger transmission system upgrades to use an existing generator’s unused interconnection capability without having to go through the new services interconnection process.
An example of a resource pairing utilizing SIS is a renewable resource combined with battery storage.
“By taking a less restrictive approach to SIS, PJM will be in a better position to maximize system benefits and enhance energy deliverability without the need for additional network upgrades,” it said.
