California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sept. 27 announced a new state-level collaborative to examine battery storage technologies and safety considerations.
The collaborative brings together multiple state agencies and departments with regulatory and industry expertise, including the California Air Resources Board, California Energy Commission, California Public Utilities Commission, CAL FIRE – Office of the State Fire Marshal, the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, and the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development.
The collaborative will review the battery storage landscape for opportunities to improve battery safety, including technology development and best practices for outreach and education, permitting and installation of battery projects, inspection and monitoring practices, and first responder training and safety.
The collaborative enhances coordination between state agencies, many of which are already working on these areas.
