Fifty-nine public power utilities have earned a Smart Energy Provider designation from the American Public Power Association for demonstrating commitment to and proficiency in energy efficiency, distributed energy resources, and environmental initiatives that support the goal of providing safe, reliable, low-cost, and sustainable electric service.

Sonja Britland, APPA's Energy Innovation & Adoption Chair, presented the designations on October 26 in Nashville, Tennessee, during APPA’s annual Customer Connections Conference.

In total, more than 110 public power utilities hold the SEP designation.

The SEP designation, which lasts for three years (December 1, 2026 – November 30, 2029), recognizes public power utilities for demonstrating leading practices in four key disciplines: smart energy information; energy efficiency and distributed energy resources programs; environmental and sustainability programs and initiatives; and communication, education, and customer experience.

This is the ninth year APPA has offered the SEP designation.

The full list of SEP designees is available on the SEP webpage.
