Voters in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Nov. 5 approved a proposition by over 79% that advances the city’s plan for a local sustainable energy utility.
The goals of the SEU include enabling the city to add renewable energy production and energy storage, share electricity across property lines, and implement energy efficiency upgrades to buildings.
SEU subscribers would pay the city for renewable energy produced on their roof or their neighbor’s roof.
The passage of the SEU is a step towards the full-scale public electricity envisioned by Ann Arbor for Public Power, a group that supports municipalization efforts in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Ann Arbor for Public Power earlier this year released a proposal for the utility governance structure should a public power utility be formed in the city.
The city is currently served by investor-owned DTE Energy.
