Staff from ISO New England’s Internal Market Monitoring unit and Energy New England’s Operations and Regulatory and Market Affairs teams recently toured Braintree Electric Light Department’s Watson 1 & 2 peaking generation units in Massachusetts following a meeting on the units’ participation in the ISO New England markets.
During the visit, the teams saw firsthand how these fast-start units support grid reliability. When ISO New England issued an unexpected dispatch request as real-time load exceeded the Day-Ahead forecast, Watson 1 & 2 ramped from offline to online, synchronized with the New England power grid, and delivered their full 108 MW capability within 10 minutes, ENE noted.
“The visit provided a valuable opportunity to connect on the important role peaking generation plays in supporting reliability and New England’s energy markets,” ENE said in a LinkedIn post.
