After nearly three years of engineering, manufacturing, and testing, one of Silicon Valley Power’s new 336 MVA power transformers recently arrived at the Port of Stockton following its journey across the Pacific from HD Hyundai Electric's manufacturing facility in Ulsan, South Korea, the California public power utility recently reported.
In 2023, SVP made the largest material procurement in our history by ordering seven 336 MVA, 115/60 kV power transformers to support major upgrades at our Northern, Kifer, and Scott Receiving Stations.
Together, these transformers will provide up to 2,352 MVA of capacity, strengthening Santa Clara, California’s electric system for decades to come, SVP said.
Each transformer is impressive in scale:
- 336 MVA
- Approximately 33 feet long, 26 feet wide, and 24 feet high
- Nearly 488,000 pounds (more than 240 tons)
Before shipment, SVP engineers traveled to South Korea to witness extensive factory acceptance testing, helping ensure these transformers met the highest quality standards before becoming part of our electric system.
“These transformers represent more than new equipment -- they are a long-term investment in reliability, resilience, and Santa Clara's future. As demand for electricity continues to grow, these receiving station upgrades will help ensure our community has the infrastructure needed to support residents, businesses, and innovation for decades to come,” SVP said.
