The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on Dec. 3 held a hearing on the nominations of Lee Beaman to be a member of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Board of Directors and Douglas Weaver to be a member of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

Multiple members asked Beaman about the TVA's independence and its possible divestment; Beaman confirmed that he would oppose attempts to divest it.

Democratic senators raised concerns with what they see as encroachment by the administration on the NRC’s independence and asked Weaver for his plans to address the issue should he be confirmed.

They also asked Weaver how he would address staffing and budgeting at the NRC. A few Democratic members asked Beaman about his lack of experience in the energy industry and how that would affect his work if confirmed.
