Muscatine Power and Water (MPW) celebrated a major milestone recently with the groundbreaking of Muscatine Solar 1 (MS1), the Utility’s first solar energy project.
The 24-megawatt facility supports MPW’s long-term strategy to diversify its energy resources while meeting evolving customer needs. The project is part of MPW’s Powering the Future initiative and reflects the public power utility’s ongoing investment in Muscatine’s energy future.
Local business leaders, community stakeholders and project partners joined MPW at the project site to mark the start of construction.
“This project is about planning responsibly for the future while continuing to deliver the reliable and affordable service our customers depend on every day,” said MPW General Manger Gage Huston. “Muscatine Solar 1 strengthens our energy portfolio, supports local sustainability goals and reflects MPW’s commitment to making long term investments that benefit our community."
Huston added, “Muscatine Solar 1 is a great example of how public-private partnerships can move important community projects forward. This project would not have been possible without the support of our Choose Green Business partners – Grain Processing Corporation, HNI Corporation, Ruveon, and the City of Muscatine’s Waste Pollution Control Plant. Their participation in the Choose Green program helps them each achieve their corporate sustainability goals, while ensuring any additional costs associated with the project do not negatively impact MPW’s residential customers.”
The project reached this milestone after several years of delays caused by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator’s (MISO) interconnection process, the utility said.
During that time, the project developer lost its financing partner, requiring the project ownership structure to be revised. MPW ultimately assumed ownership and operational control of the facility, giving the utility greater oversight of project costs, scheduling and long-term operations.
“We appreciate the patience and support shown by our customers throughout this process, especially our Choose Green Business participants,” Huston said. “By taking ownership of the project, MPW is ensuring Muscatine Solar 1 delivers long-term value to the community while keeping decision-making and accountability local.”
Muscatine Solar 1 is expected to begin operating in 2027.
