The Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company this month is celebrating 50 years of being in operation.
On December 17, 1975, Governor Michael Dukakis signed MMWEC's enabling legislation, Chapter 775 of the Acts of 1975, making it a not-for-profit, public corporation and political subdivision of the Commonwealth.
MMWEC serves 39 MLPs via membership, as generation and transmission project participants, and as demand management program participants. It is the largest provider of asset-owned generation in New England.
“Fifty years after public power joint action pioneers laid the groundwork for Massachusetts’ first and only joint action agency, we at MMWEC are proud and humbled to continue to serve the municipal light plants of the Commonwealth,” said MMWEC CEO Tom Barry.
“Joint action is one of the hallmarks of the success of public power, and we intend to continue this important work for generations to come,” he said.
