Algona Municipal Utilities of Algona, Iowa, celebrated its 135th anniversary with its customers at a community celebration on Wednesday, June 12. More than 500 people attended the event.
There were tours of the AMU power and water plants, food, music, and kids' games.
AMU can trace its water utility to 1889. The electric utility was started in 1898 following voter approval to establish an electric light franchise.
The AMU communications utility was started following a 1997 referendum, where it received 74% voter approval.
“AMU and its 38 employees are proud to be a Public Power Community,” it said.
