The Grand River Dam Authority recently welcomed Catherine Jereza, Assistant Secretary for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity, to Oklahoma for a press conference highlighting the modernization of Unit 2 at the Grand River Energy Center.
Supported by a $28.518 million U.S. Department of Energy grant and a $48.061 million GRDA investment, the project will modernize critical infrastructure, strengthen grid reliability and help Unit 2 continue serving Oklahoma communities, GRDA noted.
Along with the press conference, Jereza also visited the plant site.
GRDA is modernizing Unit 2 -- a key coal-fired unit -- at the Grand River Energy Center, “extending its operational life and ability to deliver affordable, reliable, and secure electricity to rural and municipal communities,” DOE noted.
Upon completion, Unit 2 is expected to provide approximately 450 MW of dependable generating capacity, supporting economic development and ensuring long-term energy security for Oklahoma families and businesses.
GRDA is Oklahoma’s largest public power electric utility, fully funded by revenues from electric and water sales instead of taxes.
GRDA is also a steward of the waters of the Grand and Illinois Rivers in Oklahoma and manages over 70,000 surface acres of premier Oklahoma lake waters, as well as miles and miles of the Scenic Illinois River.
