The City Council of Clearwater, Fla., recently voted in favor of a study that will examine the possible formation of a public power utility for the city, which is currently served by investor-owned Duke Energy.

Clearwater and Duke Energy have a franchise agreement that expires in December 2025.

The City Council at its Aug. 1 meeting voted in favor of funding a feasibility study that will be completed by NewGen, a consulting firm that has worked on a similar studies for a number of other communities in the U.S.
