The City of Toledo, Ohio’s, Department of Public Utilities is on track to complete its Advanced Metering Infrastructure project by the end of the year, the city reported on Dec. 4.
The initiative is close to replacing almost 116,000 outdated water meters with smart meters, providing residents and businesses with real-time data on water usage.
Key Program Updates
- Completed Installations: 109,277 smart meters installed
(87.4% of the project) - Pending Installations: 7,100 small and intermediate meters
remain to be installed
The AMI project has been carried out in phases with installation teams from Johnson Controls, minimizing disruption to residents.
To help complete the project, the city sent over 17,000 non-compliance letters, and 78% of customers who received door hangers scheduled appointments.
Installation and Outreach Highlights
- Large Meters Installed: 720 completed, 25 remaining
- Community Outreach: 67 workshops held throughout 2023
- Call Center Stats: 145,152 calls received, with 27,036 online appointments made
The smart meters provide better accuracy for billing, with estimated reads down to just 3% in September. The city has also installed 21 base stations for data transmission, enhancing the network’s reliability.
