After more than 40 years with Benton PUD, Steve Hunter officially retired on June 30. In recognition of his extraordinary career and lasting contributions to the District, Washington State's Benton PUD has named its primary operations facilities the Stephen B. Hunter Operations Center.
Hunter's journey with Benton PUD began in 1986 as an Engineering Intern. Over the next four decades, he grew alongside the organization, serving in numerous leadership roles before retiring as Sr. Director of Engineering & Operations and Assistant General Manager, becoming the District's longest-serving employee, the PUD noted on July 20.
"Throughout his career, Steve helped guide major infrastructure investments, strengthen the reliability of Benton PUD's electric system and prepare the utility to meet the evolving needs of the communities it serves. His work touched nearly every aspect of the organization, helping ensure customers continue to receive safe, reliable electric service," the PUD said.
Those who worked alongside Hunter "know his greatest impact wasn't measured only in projects. He was known for his technical expertise, thoughtful problem-solving and willingness to share what he had learned over four decades in public power. He challenged others to think critically, expected excellence and helped prepare the next generation of leaders to carry Benton PUD's mission forward."
His influence "lives on not only in the electric system that serves Benton County today, but also in the people who continue building upon the foundation he helped create."
Approved unanimously by the Benton PUD Board of Commissioners through Resolution No. 2724, the naming of the Stephen B. Hunter Operations Center "reflects one of the District's highest recognitions. For the many employees who spent years -- even decades -- working alongside Steve, the dedication is a fitting tribute to a respected colleague, mentor and leader," the PUD said.
"For future employees, it will serve as a lasting reminder of the professionalism, integrity and commitment that helped build Benton PUD into the utility it is today."
