As part of its ongoing commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable future, Austin Energy on Feb. 10 announced that its GreenChoice® renewable energy subscription program has evolved to include Texas solar energy.

Since 2001, GreenChoice has delivered 100% Texas wind-powered energy to customers in the program. "With solar producing energy during the day and more wind energy produced at night, it's a natural fit," the Texas public power utility said.

Current GreenChoice customers do not need to take any action and their rates are not affected by this change.

The longest-running voluntary renewable energy program in Texas, GreenChoice, is adding solar energy from large-scale solar farms located across the state. Solar resources within Austin Energy’s territory will remain dedicated to its Community Solar program.

"Participation in GreenChoice drives investment in Texas renewable projects and supports a cleaner, more sustainable future for our community," it said.

More than 20,000 Austin Energy customers subscribe to GreenChoice, and together their
participation is equivalent to:
•    The carbon sequestered by 313,096 acres of U.S. forests in one year, or
•    The carbon sequestered by 5,161,283 tree seedlings for 10 years, or
•    The greenhouse gas emissions from nearly 800 million miles of driving.
