Texas public power utility Austin Energy has finalized a new battery storage agreement with Jupiter Power for up to 200 megawatts of electrical power capacity.

The utility-scale battery project is expected to begin commercial operation in 2030. The agreement will significantly expand Austin Energy’s local energy storage portfolio and strengthen reliability and price stability for customers.

“This new agreement with Jupiter Power represents another major step forward in our strategy to enhance reliability, manage risk, and support Austin’s energy goals,” said Stuart Reilly, Austin Energy General Manager. “Battery storage is a crucial tool for balancing our grid, and this expanded partnership allows us to deliver economic value and operational flexibility while keeping customer bills stable.”

With this addition, Austin Energy’s battery storage portfolio will grow to 340 MW of capacity, exceeding the Resource, Generation and Climate Protection Plan’s target of studying the feasibility of installing 300 MW of battery storage by 2030.

“We’re proud to expand our work with Austin Energy and support its commitment to providing reliable, affordable power to the community,” said Jack Godshall, Chief Operating Officer of Jupiter Power. “Our company’s deep roots in Austin make these projects especially meaningful. We’re excited to bring more battery storage to the city and help meet the energy needs of our neighbors.”

In November 2025, Austin Energy issued an All‑Resource Request for Proposals seeking local energy resources across all technology types.

Jupiter Power, which already holds a contract with Austin Energy for 100 MW of utility-scale battery storage coming online by the end of 2027, submitted proposals to add additional battery facilities at its Austin site.

The new agreement is for a 200 MW, two-hour battery system, which will help protect and mitigate local wholesale energy price risk and provide flexible, dispatchable power when it begins commercial operation in 2030, Austin Energy noted.

Austin Energy will not be required to invest in the construction or ongoing maintenance of the project.

"This deal reinforces Austin Energy’s commitment to building a cleaner, smarter and more reliable energy future for the Austin community," it noted.
