Utilizing funding from an APPA program, Florida public power utility Lakeland Electric has developed a strategy document for long-term planning for a municipal utility to begin development of an application for an Early Site Permit for a next-generation small modular reactor.
Lakeland Electric developed the document in conjunction with AECOM, an infrastructure consulting firm.
The completed playbook is broken into subsections by knowledge type. AECOM provided rough cost estimates using a 300-MW modular reactor and Lakeland Electric’s McIntosh Generating Station as baselines.
This information was provided as a rough reference, and any utility will need to assess their own needs and costs.
The final document provides a rough timeline using a 36-month process, with information that will allow utilities to stretch that timeline beyond the 36-month mark.
The project received funding from APPA's DEED program, which funds research, pilot projects, and education to improve the operations and services of public power utilities.
A DEED Program Webinar was held on July 21 related to the project and speakers included Mike Dammer, Manager of Emerging Technology, Lakeland Electric, Cindy Clemmons, Legislative and Regulatory Manager, Lakeland Electric and Cathryn Lacy, Utility Marketing Manager, Lakeland Electric.
