The Illinois Municipal Electric Agency now has 29 current members that have chosen to continue with the joint-action agency currently consisting of 32 member municipalities throughout Illinois. 

The City of Cairo is the latest IMEA city council to vote to approve the new contract offered by IMEA. Their contract brings the total percentage of current members contracting into the future to 90%.

The City of Cairo approved the new contract at its July 8 city council meeting. Next, it will be placed on the agenda for consideration by the IMEA Board at their August meeting, which is the deadline to execute the contract. 

There are three remaining municipalities that also have until the August Board Meeting to sign the contract and continue with the agency.

The new contract, offered to all current members, is the product of a working group of IMEA board representatives and is a continuation of the relationship of the municipal electric systems with the IMEA.

IMEA municipal electric systems have several advantages that other wholesale suppliers can’t provide, IMEA noted.
Foremost is direct involvement in all decision making related to the cities’ and villages’ power supply.
