The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities is introducing a redesigned Community Utility Bill, providing customers with a simpler way to review their utility charges and understand the services included on their statements, the Kansas public power utility said in late October.

The updated bill features a more streamlined layout, with the total amount due prominently displayed and individual charges organized by service provider. Customers can more easily distinguish between BPU electric and water charges and Unified Government wastewater, stormwater, trash, and recycling charges, along with applicable taxes and fees.

“We wanted to make it easier for customers to see what they owe, when it’s due, and what they’re paying for,” said Jeremy Ash, BPU general manager. “The new design puts that information front and center and makes the details easier to follow.”

The Community Utility Bill has long included charges for services provided by both organizations. The redesign changes how that information is presented, not the services provided or how charges are determined.

“The goal was to create a bill that’s easier to navigate and gives customers a clearer understanding of the services included in their total charges,” said Abbey Frye, BPU chief administrative officer. “By organizing that information, we’re making it easier for customers to review their statements and find the details that matter to them.”

The redesigned statement comes at no additional cost to BPU and reduces standard residential bills from four pages to two.

Customers will begin receiving the redesigned statements in November. No action is required, and existing payment options remain unchanged.
