City Utilities of Springfield, Mo., is celebrating 20 years of its Smart Solutions program, which has helped thousands of customers make their homes and businesses more energy‑efficient, it said on Oct. 6.
Since its launch, Smart Solutions has returned more than $17.7 million to customers through more than 90,000 rebates -- "putting money back in the pockets of local families while reducing community‑wide energy and water use," it noted.
CU now offers a new rebate for ENERGY STAR®‑rated water heaters. Residential electric and natural gas customers are eligible for a rebate of up to $300 for the purchase and installation of an ENERGY STAR® natural gas or heat pump water heater. Complete details and rebate guidelines are available at cusmartsolutions.net.
Over the past two decades, CU has offered a variety of rebate programs designed to make energy‑efficient upgrades more accessible for homes and businesses. These programs help customers reduce their utility bills through energy and water savings.
Current residential Smart Solutions offerings include:
- Heating and cooling equipment
- Electric vehicle charger and outlet upgrade
- Insulation upgrades
- Smart thermostat
- Toilet rebate
Commercial rebates and programs include:
- Commercial lighting
- Smart thermostat
- Toilet rebate
- Commercial energy audit
- Commercial lighting audit
Smart Solutions also supports the community through innovative programs like Peak Rewards, launched in 2025.
By enrolling a smart thermostat, customers can help ease strain on the energy grid during peak times, like when it is very hot or cold. CU makes small, temporary temperature adjustments—2–3 degrees for up to four hours—and customers always have the choice to opt out.
Education has been a key component of the Smart Solutions program. CU’s experts have delivered more than 600 presentations to over 53,000 community members, empowering customers with practical steps to save energy and water every day, the public power utility noted.
