Another year and another clean review of the Grays Harbor PUD’s financial statements by the Office of the Washington State Auditor, the PUD reported in September.

“We are pleased to report that we are issuing an unmodified, clean audit opinion of the district’s financial statements,” said Assistant Washington State Auditor Kecia Rhodes. “This is the opinion you want to receive since it provides assurance that the financial statements are stated fairly and are materially correct.”

The review covered the period from January 1, 2025, through December 31, 2025, and evaluated the district’s internal controls and processes related to the preparation, preservation, and presentation of financial statements and use of federal funds.

The report was presented to the PUD’s Board of Commissioners and found no areas of non-compliance within the district. It also included a thank-you to district staff for their work in preparing the report.

“Our finance team and staff do a great job,” said Board Vice President Arie Callaghan. “These are the kind of audits we like to have. We have high expectations and our staff always comes through.”

“It takes a team.  We have processes and internal controls in place that require our employees to do things a certain way,” said Finance Director Mark Neary. “It’s a lot of extra effort, but having those controls in place, helps lead to clean audits.”

The 2025 review also included an examination of the district’s use of federal funds received through grant programs. That review also resulted in no findings.

“Telecom Business Coordinator Sara Travers, Legal Counsel Angel Rains, and their team have done a great job in keeping us in compliance with all the additional requirements that come with federal money,” said Neary.

“I am so proud of the work our team has done,” said General Manager Schuyler Burkhart. “I cheered inside when I heard the words ‘clean audit.’ The attention to detail, consistently following processes, and the resulting clean report once again show why our customers can be confident in the work of their PUD.”
