Nevada-based NV Energy has become the 9th Western energy provider to commit to joining the new California ISO Extended Day-Ahead Market for wholesale electricity and related services.
The joint announcement by NV Energy and the California ISO "underscores the growing regional commitment to a shared day-ahead market that can enhance reliability, improve operational efficiency, and better connect energy resources across the West. NV Energy plans to begin participating in the market in 2028," the grid operator said on Sept. 17.
Investor-owned NV Energy has been participating in the real-time Western Energy Imbalance Market since 2015. According to the ISO’s most recent quarterly benefits report, the Nevada utility has realized more than $1.1 billion in financial savings since joining the WEIM. Those benefits are projected to increase with participation in the day-ahead market because that is where the vast majority of energy transactions occur.
EDAM launched successfully on May 1 with the California ISO and PacifiCorp’s two balancing areas. Portland General Electric is on track to begin participating October 1, 2026, and four different entities are joining next year -- Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Balancing Authority of Northern California, Public Service Company of New Mexico, and Turlock Irrigation District.
The Imperial Irrigation District plans to join in 2028, along with BHE Montana. Several other Western utilities are also considering joining EDAM.
“Nevada is rapidly emerging as a critical energy hub for the West, and NV Energy’s formal participation in the Extended Day-Ahead Market is a big step towards achieving that goal,” said Elliot Mainzer, the ISO’s President and CEO. “This move will deliver meaningful reliability and cost benefits to Nevada consumers while also strengthening the connectivity and value of WEIM and EDAM across the region. We’re excited for what’s ahead as the market footprint continues to expand.”
The ISO and Western energy stakeholders worked closely together in designing EDAM to build on the proven success and tangible benefits of the Western Energy Imbalance Market, which has resulted in more than $9 billion in cumulative savings for participating entities and their customers since its 2014 start.
"EDAM uses the ISO’s sophisticated technology platform to find the least-cost electricity the day before it is needed so market participants can meet demand as cost-effectively as possible. The market also increases regional coordination and reliability while supporting the different energy policy goals of participating states," CAISO said.
