CUSTOMER BRIEF: WPPI ENERGY
Streamlining Interconnection for Member Utilities
Challenge
Before implementing PowerClerk®, interconnection processes across WPPI Energy’s (WPPI) 51 member utilities were inconsistent and largely manual. Most utilities handled applications with paper-based workflows and ad hoc processes. As a result, it could be difficult to track status, support reporting or manage applications efficiently. The challenge became more apparent for WPPI’s Wisconsin member utilities with Wisconsin’s update to Administrative Code Chapter PSC 119, which established requirements for interconnecting distributed generation facilities, and increased the need for a more standardized, unified and compliant approach.
Solution
WPPI implemented PowerClerk as a centralized platform for interconnection workflows, standardizing application intake, documentation and review across participating utilities. PowerClerk provides WPPI and its members with a shared system of record while improving coordination among utility staff, installers and WPPI’s Energy Services team. PowerClerk makes it easier to manage a shared program while preserving each utility’s role in the process.
WPPI initially deployed PowerClerk with a subset of member utilities and has steadily expanded the rollout to additional member utilities. PowerClerk now supports approximately 30 participating WPPI member utilities with three programs supporting member utilities in Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Each program complies with state-specific requirements in the interconnection process workflow.
Results
Since implementation, WPPI has increased visibility, consistency, and efficiency across their PowerClerk programs including:
- Centralized data management — Reduced manual tracking and improved access to records make it easier to generate insights, complete mandatory reporting requirements and prove compliance across utilities.
- Streamlined processing — Simplified workflows, modernized operations and accelerated processing with features such as e-signatures and integrated payments that improve the applicant experience for participating WPPI member utilities.
- Versatile program design — Supports compliance requirements while delivering a more consistent experience for member utilities, applicants and installers.
What’s next?
Looking ahead, WPPI is evaluating PowerClerk to extend it as the centralized system of record for automating annual requirements like insurance verification. WPPI is also exploring how PowerClerk Intelligence, an optional AI capability released in early 2026, may enable faster, more accurate interconnection reviews.
“We went from having varying paper-based processes across many utilities to having everything centralized in one online system—it’s made a big difference in visibility, consistency and reporting.”
